Daughters Can Get Their Daddies to do the Darndest Things
I’m running the Oakland 5K because I want to be a healthy papa and live long enough to see my daughter grow up. And although I have ulterior motives to shed some weight, the additional reason I’m running the Oakland 5K is because of love and service. Love for the generations of women that I honor, starting with my daughter, Kaia Kiku Uno-Chen. Love for her namesake, my grandmother Kiku Fukuyama Uno who recently passed away. Love for the city of Oakland where I was born and raised. And love for the organization where I am able to serve those that I care deeply about, APEN, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network. For 20 years, APEN has amplified the voice of API’s and working class communities of color for environmental, social and economic justice. For 20 years, APEN members, staff and allies have fought for the right of all people to live in thriving, healthy and resilient communities. As a recent father, the mission and vision of our work has never been as clear or urgent. Yes, I am running the Oakland 5K because I want to live a full and healthy life. But I am also running the Oakland 5K because I want my daughter and her generation to have the freedom to do the same. Thank you for your support!!
